AVG says my PC is virus free.

Periodically, my newly installed WIN98SE will start with the desktop
background color as deep blue instead of the normal medium green
color. Also there is a WIN98 ICON/Logo in upper right corner that
normally is not there. When I select that logo,
my browser is started and a WIN UPDATE web page
opens "thanks me for my interest in WINDOWS UPDATE".

What must I do to restore normal desktop color and remove that
extra ICON/LOGO? How can I prevent this from happening repeatedly?
I prefer to check for WIN updates periodically manually myself.

Thank you for any hints, Dave

That sounds to me like "active desktop" got turned on ... Next time this
happens, instead of clicking on the icon, try rigth-clicking on a blank
spot in the desktop and then under the choice "active desktop" UNcheck "view
as web page"

As for WHY active desktop got turned on ... seems to me that I have seen
this after some explorer crashes (windows explorer not Internet Explorer)...
not only crashes, but times when I have had the machine lock up and I've had
to manually ctrl-alt-del and kill the explorer.exe to avoid rebooting.

HTH

Seconded.
