I've run Spybot and Defender and AVG and they find nothing.
I've tried killing tasks and processes, but still this tiny square
remains, and it bothers me!

I've seen other people asking, but never get an answer - I thought
that by posting a screen shot, it might make it easier to identify.
Thanks!

Have you recently updated your video driver? If so try rolling it back to
the earlier version.

If you change desktop background to (say) Santa Fe Stucco, does it disappear?

if it upper left corner a white dot/square and you use an ATI video card.
it is a problem with 8.1 ati drivers.
exiting the ati control panel from the tray will remove it temporarily till you reboot.
to permanently, use the ati control panel options to prevent it running with windows start.

Thank you thank you! That was the only thing I hadn't shut down!

That's great to know it's that and not a virus or something - thanks again!
