some kind of alert-like sound... whoooo up...whoooo up I can't stop it, music seems to play ok, other sounds. Only way to stop it is to turn off the speakers via the switch on SubW. No applications running, no processes seem to be dominating, and reboot doesn't solve problem. I know of 2 machines with this problem right now. I can't figure it out....

is this a very low volume sound, "in the background" [you say music plays
ok, I take it it drowns out the whooo-up?].

If so, open up the mixer and turn off (mute) unused inputs, such as Aux
and CD Audio, and especially the microphone. If it goes away then you
know, it's simply cross-channel interference, a fairly common problem w/
sound cards (SB Live and others).

The sound continues even when MUTE ALL is activated. Volume of the sound can be adjusted via on-speaker volume control. I'm baffled!

I know if my cell phone is on and I receive a call or the signal is lost and regained, the lousy
filters on the speaker's PC board won't supress the noise/interference. Try not to have your
cell phone on while working in front of your computer.

sounds like simple EMI; is there anything near the system that could be
introducing the interference, like a floresent lamp, or a halogen lamp, or
a phone, or some sort of motor? I've heard that those "natural sun lamps"
emit lots of RF interference. Any electronics nearby that are not FCC
class B? any component inside your pc that is not FCC class B (class A is
not acceptable, must be class b).

No EMI... no other applicances in room. and these are 2 differenet machines in 2 different buildings... gonna try DxDiag to test sound devices, drivers.
