Hi,
A month ago or so, a neighbor's aging HP laptop running xp sp2 started
inserting an endless series of equal signs at login screens, the addresss
window in IE7, and in excell cells making it impossible to use excell and
difficult to login to web sites or type in site addresses. AVG 7.5 could
find no malware, nor could SpyBot search and destroy. I checked the macro
setting in excell and it is disabled. I installed FireFox and the same
thing happened there. The owner tried 3 system restore points and that
didn't fix it. In notepad the equal sign (=) works normally so the equal
key isn't stuck.
Any ideas much appreicated.

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any errors.

Try cleaning the keyboard really well; canned air will work great to get
things out of the cracks. Otherwise, the keyboard itself may be
defective. There may be a fault somewhere in the keyboard that just
happens to enter that particular code.

Try another Keyboard a' la RobV :-)

ok, i'll try another keyboard, but i don't think that's causing it because
in notepad and word it doesn't happen. But who knows? anything's possible.
Thanks,
alic
