strange screen on start up

When I start up my computer I get strange vertical broken lines and then rows
of what looks like !!!!!!!!!!!!! this also all my email envelopes are
surrounded by a pink shadow. any answeres in plain english please as I am
usless when it comes to computers Many thanks David
 
First thing to do is update your graphics card drivers.

If you do not know what graphics card or chipset you have in your PC, then
the best place to look for this is the website of your PC manufacturer.
