When cleaning up my files, I went to add/remove programs,
and there are a lot of "files" that say "windows XP
hotfix" with a number? Are these legitimate? I'm not
very computer savvy, and want to delete them if they are
not necessary. Any suggestions?

You should not be tempted to "uninstall" any "Hotfixes" listed in the
Add or Remove Programs section. They are listed there in the event
your computer does not function properly after they are installed.
Uninstalling them will uninstall the actual patches which were downloaded
and installed from the Windows Update website.

If you wish to safely remove the "uninstall files" for the
Hotfixes (i.e. $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ files shown in Windows Explorer)
and cleanup your Add/Remove Programs list, visit MS-MVP Doug Knox's
excellent website for instructions.

Remove Hotfix Backup files and the Add/Remove Programs Registry entries
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm

Note: Doug's program only removes the uninstall files and Hotfix entries
in the Add/Remove Programs listing. It does not remove the
actual updates.

Dear Vickie,

These HOTFIX programs are updated componets of your XP Operating System. You can delete them, but it will reset those very programs back to their former version.

The HOTFIX as you see if in the add/remove panel is there for you to uninstall the updated verdsion in case your new update clashes with your current computer configuration.

No two computers are identical in every respect when it comes to home computers because everyone has their own personal preferences. If perchance the new update causes your system to hang, you can uninstall the update by means of these HOTFIX shortcuts in the ADD\REMOVE of Control Panel.
