MudBug

Ok, 2 days ago while trying to install windows xp pro (sp1 licensed copy
from wife's work) my computer just turned off. On turning it back on
there was no display whatsoever. Everything seemed to be running fine
yet, no signal to the monitor.

It was upgrade time anyway, so I bought a Gigabyte K8 Triton, AMD 64
3500 (socket 939) and a Radeon X850 Pro. Reformatted the Maxtor 250gb
hd on another computer, reinstalled windows xp pro got everything
installed and still no signal to monitor. I've tried 3 different
monitors with the same problem, no signal/display. Tried starting
computer with only video card and monitor attached, still no display.
Can anybody help before I pull out the few hairs I've got left??

sidenote: as of right now the only things I've got hooked up are the
video card and the hard drive. I followed the install to the letter, as
this is not my first home built system. please help if possible.

There may have been an electricity problem so the electricity could have
attacked your computer. Are you sure everything is ALL right,no damaged
hardware?

It is very difficult and in some ways impossible to have hardware help via
just posting ,no pictures and stuff like that so I think you'd better take
your PC to a REPUTABLE computer store and ask IT specialist for help.

REPUTABLE means really repitable and big and not your local garage place.:)

I had a similar problem a few months ago, not after an upgrade, but just when switching on. Same symptoms, no signal. At first I thought it was a bios problem. I reset the CMOS and the computer booted. Ah, I thought. After another restart the same problems, though this time it wouldn't reboot after resetting the CMOS. I then thought dead CMOS battery. Replaced it, still no joy.

It turns out my motherboard just upped and dies all by itself, no warnings, nothing. It was just under a year old and still under warranty, so I had it replaced free of charge. Since then, no other problems. So I would do as Panda Man suggests, take your computer to a "REPUTABLE" dealer and have the system examined properly.

It's Only Me.

"Reputable" means "big"? Big computer stores include CompUSA, Circuit City,
Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc. As far as I'm concerned, these are the poorest
and least reputable choices available. I would never recommend that anyone
bring his computer to a store like these for service. In most cases it's far
better to use a small local mom and pop store.

after 4 hours of trying a whole boat-load of different things (changing
psu, changing video cards, switching monitors and display cables,
detaching and re-attaching one thing at a time, checking voltages,
etc.) I finally found out the problem:
The above motherboard would not work with my specific AMD Athlon 64
3500+. It was a Venice core @ 90ns, FSB2000, and L2 512kb. The above
mobo would work with the same chip, but if it had a Newcastle core @
130ns, FSB200, and L2 512kb. Strangely, the mobo would take a 90ns core
chip, but only if it had an L2 cache of 1mb. Weird!

I returned the Gigabyte mobo and got a Abit AV8-3rd Eye. A better board
and it works with my chip too! Lesson to be learned:

The bottom line is make sure everything is totally compatible prior to
install. It will save you quite a few grey hairs if you do! Thanks to
everybody who offered the free advice. While my answer was found
elsewhere, it is greatly appreciated!
