Strange problem with my CD-RW and DVD+RW drives

Until a few days ago, I had a DVD+RW drive plugged into my
HP Pavilion PC, and it was working fine. Shortly after
burning a DVD on the drive, though, I noticed that NERO no
longer recognized it. I explored further, and found that
other programs no longer recognized the drive. I looked
in my control panel, but it said the drive was working
correctly. I went into My Computer and looked at the
drive icon. When I placed a disc (either CD or DVD) into
the drive, the description of the drive changed from
Memorex DVD+RW to CD-ROM, and the icon for the drive
changed slightly, and a black box with the type of medium
(either CD-ROM or DVD-ROM) appeared at the bottom of the
icon. When I clicked on the drive icon, it said, please
insert a disc into drive D:.
I figured there was a problem with the drive, so I took it
out and replaced it with my original HP CD-RW drive, but
found that it had the same problem. I have tried un-
installing and re-installing the drivers, and
troubleshooting the device, but haven't been able to
figure out what's wrong. If anyone can please help me, it
would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I can identify with your problem. I have sonycdrw185e3
and the same problem now for a month! I've tried
everything you have. I have xp pro, duron 900. Problem
started the same way. No cd or cdrw works. Please e-
mail me if you find the solution. Thank you.

i know how you feel.I installed nero and then uninstalled
it as the "IN CD" feature did not work with my cd-rw.when
i uninstalled it my cd-rw/dvd/floppy now do not work at
all, giving messages like:-insert disc or cannot read disc

Well, I managed to get both drives working again by
restoring Windows to a previous setting using System
Restore. I still don't know how it went bad in the first
place, though. Ah well.
