Hello,

I never put my laptop (Samsung X20, Centrino 1.6G, 1GB, 100GB HDD) on standby however I did it 3-4 days ago and put it in my bag. Take it out after 2 hours and tried to turn it ON. It failed to do that. I have to take out battery and put it back on but since then my Laptop is not turning on with the Power button. I can still turn it on with one of the hotkey (basically For video editing). Can anyone tell me whats wrong with it.

My diagnoses is as:

Power button works as when windows is running and you press power button, it straight away prompt you to what to do (Restart, Standby, Shutdown).

It is not the battery as even if you take out the battery. It still turns on with hotkey and not the power button itself.

Battery always show you 100% even after running 15-20 minutes on battery.

However Battery meter (On battery itself) does not show you more than 40%.

I am totally confused as I am sure it is not the software it self as same thing happens if I boot other windows (I installed 3 windows on my HDD). Help from you people are really appreciated.

Could be a known issue, possibly even addressed in a firmware/driver release.
Have a crack at this....unless you're on this version now?

Do you have this version of this app installed? (Battery Manager)
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/p...pecode=&model=NP-X20&filetype=SW_cm&language=

It would also be worth installing this updater app...

Good luck!

If you go to the Boot Menu in Bios - navigate down to Smart Battery Calibration and select 'Yes' - re-boot and the system will completely discharge the battery over a couple of hours to help re-calibrate and alledgedly give more accurate battery level detection.

Consult the online user manual for your lappy via Kevsters link for more info :thumb:

I tried all this, Have already the latest version of BIOS, Battery manager is nothing special but add some profiles in power setup.

Update Manager finds an update for Intel Graphics card but always failed to install it (Without telling any reason) But I don't think so it is related anyways.

I tried that option once but haven't completed it. Took too long. :-)))

I will do it tonight and let you know the results tomorrow.

Any words on why it is not turning on with regular power button and working with hotkey buttons. Really sounds strange to me.

Done the Battery Callibration but all the same. Still reporting 100% always and does not charge more than 40%.

Do you think buying a new battery is worthwhile???

Yes mate - Batteries do deteriorate in their charge threshold/sustained output.

Replace it with a reputable/trusted brand...
or you might regret it :-o

Okay, Before I replace it, I have some more questions in my mind.

My laptop battery life was about 3 hours and suddenly it dropped. Do you think it is Battery or Laptop issue???

Secondaly even if I take the battery out i still can't power it up with the Normal Power button but from another hot key button.

Do you think buying a new battery is gonna resolve my issue. I appreciate your feedback before I spend £50 on battery.

I'm guessing that model has a non-smart battery which has no means of relaying the power info and subsequently always states 100%. Occasionally these batteries are also unable to determine when to stop accepting current for charging, so they can over-charge and ruin. Its generally advisable to monitor the charging yourself i.e. if you know it takes 3hrs, make a mental note to cease after that time.
Although it doesnt boot, if you dont get any LEDs on when you press power, it's vaguely possible that a surge of some kind from overcharging has knocked out the power button.

The only other thing i can think of for the actual power/hotkey problem is that you may have knocked a setting in power management which no longer validates the power key over the hotkey

I don't think so that it is not a Smart Battery. As it is Centrino laptop which is quite a new type of laptop and should have smart battery. It is used to show the accurate battery before it goes wrong. Also It was working all right a day before I put it on standby.

If you think it is power management issue then why it is doing the same behaviour when windows is not loaded (In A System Startup)

If you think power button is ruined out then why it works after turning on the laptop (I can turn off the computer using normal power button).

If you think battery is gone then why it does not turn on with Power button, when battery is removed as well.
