Strange problem with configuring TCP/IP

Hi, I'm trying to fix a networking problem for a friend's
laptop. I need to connect it onto a small business
network which has it's own IP add, gateway etc. I
originally thought that it should detect automatically but
it doesn't, at least not with the correct netmask and
DNS. So I tried to configure the network components
manually. This is where the complications start. First,
the properties option for the network components in the
local lan connection does not function. It is not even
possible to uninstall or install components. However,
I've managed to connect it onto my own wireless network so
I assume the components are working properly. I was
thinking of repairing the components with the installation
CD, problem is that my friend has lost it. I'm not that
familiar with Windows 2000 so may be there's something
very simple I've missed. Thanks a lot!

You should be able to configure if you are indeed logged on as an administrator.
However alternatively you can use netsh via the command line to configure tcp/ip
on a W2K computer while logged on as an administrator. I believe it should be
already on the computer if it has a recent service pack. The link below shows
how to use netsh to configure a network adapter with static IP info or to use
dhcp. --- Steve
