Strange problem with AMD Athlon 64 hangs on load drop

Hi folks,

I'm running into a strange problem with my PC hanging (freeze)
apparently when the CPU load drops suddenly from 100% like when exiting
a full load application. I've poked around a little in searches but
found nothing conclusive yet to help me with this problem, I hope
someone here has a pointer to possibly fix this issue.

The system:
AMD Athlon64 clawhammer 3700+ S754 2.4GHz HTT 4x FSB 200
MSI K8N-Neo Platinum mainboard, latest release BIOS
(Onboard NIC, Firewire, Sound disabled in BIOS)
ATI X1600 Pro AGP
C-media based sound card PCI
Realtek network card PCI
3x 512MB DDR333/400 (running at 333)

Windows XP SP2 fully patched
NVIdia chipset drivers
AMD processor driver installed

Normally I run BOINC and under 100% load all the time it can run stable
for days on end, no problem. It's an error I have not seen before, myself.
Previously I had a Newcastle 3200+ AMD cpu in there, and I did not seem
to have this problem. Unfortunately I no longer have that CPU so I'll
have to make do with the new one.

Any pointers to a possible cause, solution or workaround to this problem
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Mark.

If you haven't, you may need to install an AMD 64 driver/s. Check
here:

If you're running Cool'n'Quiet you might try turning it off in the
bios and see if that helps. It sometimes causes funny quirks to happen.

Are you overclocking anything?

Like I said I have them installed. Cool'n'quiet was disabled in the
BIOS... Maybe I should try the possible combinations of it
enabled/disabled and with or without the drivers?

I'll try first with the bios setting enabled then. Perhaps the driver
doesn't like the function disabled in the bios while installed...

Not overclocking anything. it's not needed at all. definitely fast
enough on stock speeds for me.

Test your RAM with memtest86.

That was one of the first things I did :) The ram is fine.

Turned out that changing the mainboard out to another one fixed this
issue though, seems like the MSI K8N Neo Platinum boards have problems
with the high-end CPU range for that socket type, it's running stable on
the Asus I got now.

Thanks for the help.
