strange problem, win2k on ide1, 2nd HD on ide0, bios set to boot HD1

strange problem, win2k on ide1, 2nd HD on ide0, bios set to boot HD1

if i unplug the 2nd ide0 drive, then win2k won't boot on ide1

why is this

and why is ide1 being referred to as HD1 in the bios boot order instead
of ide0?


they are both detected at boot, further once booted the drive does not
show up in the file system, 'my computer' only the ide1 drive?
I'm stumped.

i want to either boot linux off the 2nd drive or stripe it and am not
getting either done, i dual booted this way in the past just swapping
boot order, i know linux only want to be on one particular channel,
but if windows works this way, why isn't it ide0 or why does it
REQUIRE that the other ide channel be filled
with a drive it then doesn't show in the file system?

How far does the boot process go with only one disk connected?

Because what used to be rdisk(1) is now rdisk(0). See boot.ini.

Because the 2nd HD does not have valid (to Windows) partitions.

without the 2nd drive plugged into ide0 i get no further than

verifying DMI pool data
disk boot failure

w2k's boot.ini somewhere?

.......well previously it appeared and asked if i wanted to format it ,
but yes it has linux OS on it

Some disks have two jumper positions for a master disk:
a) Single Master
b) Master with Slave present

I suspect that you're on setting b), hence the failure you
experience.
 
both cables are on cable select
i've referenced the manuals online to double check this
any other ideas welcomed

just out of curiousity what is wrong with just leaving both drives on
'cable select'

i want to stripe the drives so would prefer not to place both on one
ide header

besides i want to know whats up with what would cause such a funky
thing as needing both ide headers full to boot win2k off the 2nd ide
channel?

There is nothing wrong with leaving both drives on "cable
select", provided you can get it to work. During trouble-
shooting you have to explore all options, until you know
what's going on.
 
ok well maybe i'll place both on master but seems to me cable select
vs. master shouldn't matter
