Hi All,

Firstly, let me admit that I cross post to two groups, general and
networking.

My Windows 2000 AD finally crashed today. As that is the only DC/AD we have,
I have to promote one of the 2003 member server to DC. However, one strange
thing happen and hope anyone of you can explain to me.

There are 2 network ports in the Dell PowerEdge 650, where the Windows 2003
server resides. The network port 2 is enabled and connected to a switch.
After I configure the ADS to work, all run fine. However, for some reasons,
I enable network port 1 and assign an IP to it. The DC suddenly stop
working. When I try to join client to the domain, it always says DNS related
error. This is despite the network port 1 is not connected to the switch.
That means it is only enabled but not connected.

I use DameWare utilitites and it reported no PDC. I panicked. After demote
and promote the DC, it still does not work. I finally try to disable network
port 1 and it works. The DC is working and I can join client to the domain.

Can anyone explain to me why is this so?

Go to Network Connections, Advanced, Advanced and make sure the internal nic
is on top.
Can you post the ipconfig/all?
