Strange "Open File" dialog box behavior

I have a user using XP Pro, SP1 on a brand new 2.6 GHz Pentium 4 with 1 GB
of RAM. Her home directory is on a file server. If she tries to open a file,
either in something like Word or third-party applications that use the
common "Open File" dialog box she has problems. Here's what happens. Say the
file she is after is way down the list. She clicks on the slider and drags
it toward the end of the list. Part way there the file list goes blank and
then a few seconds later it reappears back at the beginning of the list. If
I move the directory structure to the local hard disk this doesn't happen.
Because of numerous other issues the files must be on the server.

I think it's a timing issue. I reduced the number of items in the directory
to around 2000 but that didn't help. (it was over 4000) It also occurs in
directories with around 1000 items but it doesn't happen in much smaller
directories with say, 300 items. Is there any way to modify the timeout
before the dialog resets to the beginning? Or any other solution?

Thanks,
Mark

I have experienced this problem with third-party software and I think it is
a limitation of the software. However, I have never had this problem with
MS products.

If you find a solution please let me know.
