Strange noise

Ever since upgrading to Windows XP from ME the computer
is making a noise off and on like a jackhammer. It doesn't
seem to be related to any particular thing we're doing. Mu
uncle thinks it may be a bad hard drive (but it's only 3
yrs. old).
I can't do anything inside the CPU to check what Dell
suggested--don't have the skill/knowledge. Anyone know
what this noise is and how to fix it?

If you don't think it is a bad fan/blade,then go with
your Uncles theory and backup then replace hard
drive......Good luck.

If you're unsure/unable/unwilling to open the case and listen to see where
the noise if coming from, you certainly aren't going to want to try
replacing whatever is bad.

Best bet would be to let someone repair it for you before whatever it is
gets worse.

Open up the case, which won't harm it. Then turn the computer on and
listen where the noise is coming from. You may have to turn it on and
off a couple of times. If it sounds like its from the area of the hard
drive do some things that will access the drive and keep listening. If
the noise continues then you know the hard drive is on its last leg.
You do NOT need to be a rocket scientist to do this. You may even
learn something. :-)

This happened to me, take the advice on seeing if accessing (read/write
functions...) the hard drive seems to cause the sound. Do get it in for a
check up, the phone support at Compaq told me mine was something else, then
2 weeks later my hard drive died completely- lost everything, and my PC was
9 mos. old!
