Strange Mirror Behavior

After getting my Dell PE2650 baxk online after close to disaster I am
seeing
strange things in windows explorer.
I have 5 disks (Two in RAID5 and two in RAID1/MIRROR)
I have all my web stuff + SQL Data on Raid 5

The Mirror is devided into 3 volumes:
1. OS
2. SQL Log files
3. Pagefile

When I look in Computer Management everything looks nice and dandy, but
when
I look in explorer I see an extra Volume with the same name as the OS
Volume
and every change done to the OS volume is mirrored in this new volume.

What gives and what should I do?

Sounds like you installed the rollup V1. Seems duplicate mounting of the
%systemdrive% can be a side effect. Issue 3

Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4

Thanks, That is what happened.

How can I tell what drive it is currently started on? C drive or the new
virtual drive?

Is it just me or has it become extremely dangerous to apply patches? My
server is locked down and I have had a ton of recent permission issue
after
patching my server.

From a command prompt;

echo %systemdrive%

should work.

Thanks Dave

Now the system is back in orderr, but this is as close as I have been to
thinking my system was dead for sure.

I didn't notice the extra virtual drive initially and unfortunately in the
meantime I ran into some problems with ASPNET that caused me to uninstall
and reinstall the framework - This time on the virtual drive. Plus I
installed some other stuff + patches while booted on the virtual drive.

Result: I couldn't boot my system in either normal or safe mode. I also
tried last known good but that didn't work either.
After many attempts of restoring my system I tried last good one more time
and was lucky to get the system rebooted. Fortunately this time I could
get
in and see that some of the programs were looking for files on the virtual
drive.

I think I am going to increase the time I wait before installing patches
from microsoft. It is just too risky. (Patch & Pray)

Yes this one made quite a mess of things. Glad to hear you were able to
recover.
