At work we have a win2k platform running office XP and
Exchange 2000. Just the other day one user started
getting a strange message in outlook when she clicked new--
mail message in outlook :"A program is trying to access e-
mail addresses you have stored in outlook. Do you want to
allow this? click yes or no.
I first ran the virus scan which is up to date..and
nothing found. Then I ran Ad aware program and it found
only two things that I deleted. Same probelm. So I
lowered the security in outlook and word to low. I
checked her Macros and Rules and nothing was out of the
ordinary. She does not have a PDA or any accessories
attached to the PC except for an HP USB photosmart
printer. Every time she tries to compose a new message
this comes up. It's driving me crazy as to what it is?
Any thoughts on this?????

It sounds like the newly-released Office XP Service Pack 3 was installed on
that machine. We've been seeing this issue crop up a lot in the Outlook
newsgroups over the past few days. You may be able to get around the
problem by either disabling Word as your e-mail editor or updating some of
your add-ins, especially virus scanners. See the following article for more
information:

There's also an MSKB article which explains the problem:

Actually the problem started happening to us also on all our Office
2003 and Office XP with SP3. The only was we have found to bypass the
problem is to go to Tools/Options/Mail Format and check the "Use
Microsoft Office Word to edit e-mail address". We were getting the
warning messages everytime we wrote an e-mail or sometimes on certain
replies also. If anyone knows why this happens and how to correct it,
e-mail me at (e-mail address removed).
