Windows Vista, all updates
Office 2003, all updates

User has several avi files on various powerpoint slides in multiple
presentations. When he tries to play an avi movie, he gets the error:

MCI Error: the filename is invalid. make sure the filename is not
longer than 8 characters, followed by a period and extension.

other video formats (mpeg, for example) plays fine on the slides

the movies play fine in media player when opened through file list in
explorer

the presentation works just fine (movies play as they should) on two
other WinXP machines.

DOS filenames?!?!?!

Any help/suggestions would greatly appreciated.

File path could be too long. Try putting the presentation and media files in
the root directory (C:) and running from there. Also try re-installing WMP.

Thanks, I'll give your suggestions a try. It is a new Vista
installation, perhaps something went amiss...

FYI, it was a matter of the path character length. I moved the folder
containing the presentation and the movie files to the root directory
and everything played as it should. I'm encouraging the user to be a
bit more conservative in his his file naming :)
Thanks to all for their help.
