Strange malfunctions

Windows XP Home Edition, 2002 Service Pack 3 Running on a Packard Bell.

I recently had some Trojan Horse infections but managed to clear them with
AVG Free version.

In doing so, I believe I may have deleted something ( a*.dll perhaps) in
C:\Windows\System 32,
because I am experiencing some strange behaviour. These are some of the
problems.

1. Help & Support on the Start Menu does not open.
2. System Restore just opens with a blank page and gets no further.
3. I use System Mechanic; it loads it's opening page but won't run.
4. In Windows Explorer, clicking Search gives a blank search pane on the
left (actually my desk top blue).
5. On line, some sites I use fail to fully load. Others redirect me and
the resultant site appears different than usual.
On the Microsoft site "Is this copy of Windows Legal", it provides 5
option links to identify your purchase method,
none of which do anything when clicked.

There may well be other strange malfunctions.
I am trying to avoid a complete clean reinstall as supplied by the factory.
Is there any way to check if my operating system has any critical files
missing
and are there any reliable repair tools available.

sounds like the registry crashed.

perhaps you can boot into safe
mode and initiate a restore point
from there.

Note: "... Running on a Packard Bell....." - a Packard Bell? AVG is an
antivirus utility - your symptoms represent malware/spyware issues - suggest
downloading and running "Malwarebytes".

It sounds like your machine is still infested and/or severely damaged.

You highest priority at this point should be to insure that your backup
copies of your Valued Data are up to date. You may have data loss already.

You may not have gotten all the nasties off your computer but once you feel
that it is clear of virus/spyware or malware, I would next run XP's System
File Checker. From, Start>Run> enter "sfc /scannow" in the box. Hope this
helps.
