This is a strange question. I'm looking to block all image files other than
.jpg files in Internet Explorer. I don't want to see any .gif or .bmp and
such. I've tried to figure out a way to do this, but I can't figure out
how. Anyone know of any toolbars or add ons that can do such a thing?

Just as an aside, please fix your clock. You are posting from the future.

Go to control panel>folder options>file types.

You can delete any file types there or you can disassociate them with a
program. Your choice.

My first thought as well. Then I realized they were asking about
Internet Explorer specifically. Would that work for both?

Hmmmm good point. The change would be global and would effect all
applications. The OP is specifying IE only. Other than turning off
graphics all together in IE, I can't think of any other way to do it, but
then you wouldn't get the jpg either.

By chance, are you trying to kill the .gif's and .bmp's and such that
are associated with website ads?

If that's the case, a host file will do wonders. The one I use is
located here:

I don't know of any offhand, but I wonder if some firewall program might
not be able to block files by type? Maybe Proxomitron?

Assuming we are talking IE6 have you tries posting to
mircosoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser? If not IE6 the
appropriate MS group?

Set up a new News account in OE with this server:

news.microsoft.com

Then search for "mircosoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser" from
the newsgroup list.

Hmmm..OK... 2 ideas off the top of my head-
1. A freeware proxy program called proxomitron. It gives you absolute
control over all aspects of your browser in regards to webpages. You can
use it to filter ads/images/java/cookies/backgrounds/background
sounds/tables/css style sheets... blah- i think you get the point...put
it this way- if someone put it on a webpage, proxomitron can remove
it/hide it/block it and yes, even change it before it ever gets to you.

2. At the risk of sounding browser-centric (I'm not- to each their own),
Mozilla with the adblock extension makes blocking content uber easy.
Yeah, yeah, I know you said IE, but this is the first thing that I
thought of since it would be so easy to do (as easy as typing *.gif and
*.bmp).

Other than that, I can't think of any freeware programs that do it in IE
(I try not to use it)

Thanks for your help! I posted the question there.

I've got a program called TI.exe. (Toggle Images)

I've had it for ages and can't find any reference to it, or recomember how
I got it.

It lives in my Windows\favorites\links folder.

It is 30kB and certainly works when in operation no imafes are allowed,
which can certainly speed things up if like me, you live on the end of a
bit of damp string.

So I've got no URLs for you, but if noone else can help or I can post it
for you in my webspace.

mike

Hi Mike - It's part of an MS Power Tools add-on called Web Accessories - you
can get it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/previous/webaccess/ie5wa.asp

It works fine in IE6 except that you'll need to do an F5 Refresh on the
blank page that the Images List click brings up to finally get them.
Thorsten Gudera has created both German and English "corrected" Versions of
imglist.htm which fix this. You can contact him here:
Thorsten.GuderaATt-online.de (replace AT with @ sign). For Toggle Images
(which you'll find on your Links toolbar), remember that you'll have to
refresh after toggling to see the effects on the current page. (BTW, if you
place a shortcut to it on your Quick Launch toolbar or wherever, you can
also use it to prevent spam HTML emails from "calling home".)

Here's also a fix for "Copy Location" courtesy of a poster nicknamed Caveman
I've verified that this works fine for Win2kPro and should for any other OS
as well:

"Use Notepad to open GRABURL.HTM (found usually in WINDOWS\WEB), and edit as
shown below:

[FIND:]------------------------------------------------
document.all.location.value = win.document.location.href;
[REPLACE WITH:]----------------------------------------
document.all.location.value = win.location.href;
[END]

(so, the only thing to do is removing ".document" from the line)"

Be aware also that there is a bug in the Zoom functions. The following is a
(modified)
quote of a previous posting by Alan Edwards of a previous quote by Ron
Vernon which outlines the fix:

"I have not checked recently if the error has been corrected.
Without looking at your attachments, I assume you have made
adjustments like this old post by Ron Vernon MVP, which I made myself.
------quote
This is a bug in the web accessories.

To fix it, use Notepad to open ZOOMIN.HTM (found usually in
WINDOWS\WEB ),
and edit it to read both image dimensions before setting any of them:

old contents:
....
h = parentwin.event.srcElement.height * 2;
parentwin.event.srcElement.height = h;
w = parentwin.event.srcElement.width * 2;
parentwin.event.srcElement.width = w;
....

new contents (the 3rd line in the fragment above moved up):
....
h = parentwin.event.srcElement.height * 2;
w = parentwin.event.srcElement.width * 2;
parentwin.event.srcElement.height = h;
parentwin.event.srcElement.width = w;
....

Do the same for ZOOMOUT.HTM changing '*' to a '/'
..
-----end quote

....Alan

I've attached corrected versions of zoomout.htm and zoomin.htm since
they're fairly small. (If you have a firewall, they may get re-named
extensions - just change back to .htm) You can just place them in
\Windows\Web if you chose.

one of the IE 5 Web Accessories?

<q>
Image Toggler
Now you can turn off images for extra speed, and turn them back on
again, even more quickly and easily. Simply look for Toggle Images in
the Links bar and click it.

Thamks Jim and Susan, for the info - I've got the whole kit now, and the
tools look like being very useful; I'm very chuffed to have them.

The Zoom in/out worked well for me as installed - I was gobsmacked - but I
changed to the corrected version anyhow, maybe I didn't look hard enough
for the bug, or perhaps IE6 is more tolerant than IE5.

I had a lot of fun playing with the others, too, can't wait to use them in
anger.

I knew I had to refresh the pages to get images if I wanted them, so the
fact that they don't appear on images list isn't a problem.

I don't have a graburl.htm on my computer (and never really felt the need,
as I don't know what it does...) - the only web hits I got for it were to
do with fixing a virus or somthing of that nature.

Do you know where I can find it if you think it's worht having?

Thanks for the suggestions Mike and Jim. I found something called IEjet.
It isn't free, but the trial is for 30 days I think. You can set it not to
load images according to their size. It is the best thing I have found so
far.

Hi Mike - Here it is (corrected) - copy everything between (but not
including) the ________________ and then save as graburl.htm.

var win = external.menuArguments;
document.all.location.value = win.location.href;
document.all.location.select();
document.execCommand("Copy");

</SCRIPT>
</HTML>

Just a little additional note - After you've played with it a little bit,
you may find that Quick Search.exe is extremely useful. Here's a URL where
you can find a wide variety of searchs (as .reg files) which you can add in
addition to/or including those furnished with it. Neat stuff - you'll see
what I mean!
