This is weird, and I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.
When one of my family logged in to their account, the entire desktop had
adopted a wingdings-like font. Icons were labelled with it, and the log in
screen had adopted it as well, and so had the other accounts we managed to
get into. Nothing else seems to be affected, web pages still display
correctly for example. But it's very difficult to get around when you can't
make out what the words on the screen are. I eventually got into System
Restore and fumbled my through the process. Some of the text was still
English further down but even here the buttons were still labelled
unintelligably.
This has happened twice now so I am concerned as I have no idea what to look
for and I don't know when it might happen again.
A full virus scan comes up with nothing, and I use system mechanic regularly
to remove junk files.
Any ideas anyone?
