I found an odd folder on my hard drive tonight. It was named
"!Submit". In it were .html files named "msg0000????.html",
something I've been alerted to before, except those were .dll files
installed by a piece of adware.

My question is... Is this a by-product of a virus/adware and has
anyone seen this before? Unfortunately, when I tried to Google this,
Google drops the exclamation mark, making the search useless.

Thanks in advance!

What you have is almost certainly the result of malware.
Have you downloaded and run Spybot and Ad-aware? If not, Please do and let
us know what they found.
both are free and downloadable via the net. Google on them.
O.T advice: XP-pro is easier to protect than W98, if you are by chance using
98 consider an upgrade.

I would disagree with that statement. Basic W98 can be "protected"
with a good software firewall, an up-to-date a-v program, and a user
who practices safe hex. XP (or any of tne NT based versions)
introduces a whole lot more things to consider, the first being user
knowledge. W98SE, properly updated [1], is still an adequate OS for
the.. um.. common home user.
if you are by chance using 98 consider an upgrade.

Only if the hardware is compatible, of course.

[1] and not using MS browser-like OS objects and mail programs. :-)

Oh yes! I use Spybot S&D, AdAware and SpySweeper (trial), as well as having
the Sygate personal firewall and the AVG anti-virus (all updated). I'm
assuming that it was just a by-product of a previous infection <fingers
crossed>.

One interesting thing, Spysweeper seemed to find some malware that the
others missed. From what I could ascertain, SpySweeper is on the up and up,
but I get worried when it comes to anti-spyware programs that I'm not
familiar with. Anyone here know about this program or use it?
