Strange Excel problem

Recently, a strange problem has evolved in my Excel installation (Office 2000
Professional.) Clicking in any cell invokes this weird "sticky-keys" (for
lack of a better term) mode where any movement of the mouse causes cells to be
highlighted in the direction of the mouse movement (i.e. as if you have your
mouse button held down while you are moving the mouse over the various cells.)

Clicking anywhere else does not get acknowledged, so there's no way to end
the selection, no way to get out of this mode, and the only way I have found
to get out of this horrible mode is to End the Excel Task.

I've tried uninstalling Office and re-installing. It made no difference.
This is a fairly new development, Excel used to work fine on this computer
and I can't imagine what would have occured to make this start happening.
I've used an updated virus scanner to check for viruses, to no avail.

Curiously, I can click anywhere in the menu bars of Excel with no problem.
It's just the cells that seem to invoke this behavior. Furthermore, as long
as I stick to arrow key navigation and using hotkeys, I can do everything I
want to do. It's a little tedious though, not being able to use the mouse.
I have NO mouse problems in any other software, Microsoft or otherwise.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Paulnsue,

Try if updating your mousedriver helps.
