Hey. I've a Lite-On LTR24102B CDRW, a Matshita DVD ROM and an old Maxtor 3
Fireball 40Gb HD. Lately I've been having strange problems on the Secondary
channel, the LTR is master and the Matshita is slave... On startup on the
BIOS check, it recognises and displays the HD fine, then when it gets to the
LTR & Mitsumi,, instead of being "LITE-ON LTR24102B" and "MATSHITA DVD-ROM"
it says something like "LITE-NN LCR2411B" and "MARSTITA DVD-RMM". Windows
doesn't even recognise them atall anymore.

This has only happened recently, and the computer hasn't been moved or
touched until today. Could this be a faulty IDE connector?

I've upgrade the firmware on both, but did the matshita about 9 months ago,
and the LTR about 4 weeks ago and they worked fine until recently. Maybe
(another) damaged mobo?

Took of the cover today to finally see what was goin on, disconnected a few
things to put in another cheap 40Gb HD... went to put in the HD and then
realised, with my case being small and crappy piece of sh!t I'd need to take
out the HSF for it to slide in, so I left it for another day. When I
connected everything together and turned it on the system wouldnt start up
atall. Fans wouldnt even turn. Checked the power supply and it was fine,
then realised fiddling with the floopy connector itd turn on for a split
second. I disconnected the floppy cable and now it works fine.

Arrghh wots goin on?! Either I now have a faulty floppy AND secondary IDE
cable or the mobo's scrap?
Also can someone please suggest a good (and cheap) tower case, I'm fed up
with the lack of space in my current one, not to mention the heat!

Thanks in advance for the help, this is really beginning to frustrate me!

And incase your wondering I'm at a mates house using his computer hence the

Or the PSU is being overloaded. Disconnect a drive and you're reomving
the straw currently breaking the camels back.

Hmm yeh I hadn't thought of that, I hoped the 300W could handle it. But i
have put in a new fan or two. Its a mini tower case wif ECS K7VMM+ micro atx
board, gets a little warm in there.
Cheers ill give it a try

No luck, I disconnected all the nonessential fans, drives, cards and
peripherals, still the same problems with the secondary channel and floppy.

I'm just using standard ribbon cables, perhaps they've been damaged and
could be picking up some kinda of EM interference from the other components
or fans?

you have got the jumpers on the drives set right havent you.

i once had cable select on one of my primary/secondary setup and it wasnt
recognised and they were detected as something odd in my bios too.

Try disconnecting a drive at a time to see if anything changes.

Cant think of anything else really. Hope it aint he motherboard!

First I'd pull both ide cables from the mobo, and disconnect them from the
drives so you have one in each hand. Then pull the power plugs from all the
drives except for the boot drive.
Then I'd pick one, and plug it into channel one, and into the drive with the
operating system on it, and see what happens.

If it doesn't boot right, swap the cables. This is to see if one of the
cables is bad. The odds of both being bad are zero.

Thanks for the quick replies.. Did all the checks, duno about the CDRW&DVD
problems, but I know whats causing the power outtage withthe floppy.
Basically the mobos been damaged, i mustve been too harsh pushing in the
floppy conn. The mobo needs to have pressure to lift it up again slightly
and it turns on.
So now it looks like I'm looking for a new mobo and decent sized case. Any
suggestions appreciated!

I think this is the ide cable or connector. Friend had a similar
problem once. I arrived on the scene and pushed in the ide connecter a
couple of millimeters... The misspellings comes from one or more bits
not being connected.
