I am using FP 2002. I have one page (.asp) that I open and try to switch to
HTML view. I get a MessageBox saying "An error occurred while attempting to
write the file", then the HTML view displays the sentences "Error reading
file" and "Cannot open wpeA.tmp: no such file or folder". I've editted the
..asp before, this just started happening last friday. Anyone have any idea
why this error started occuring. Also, I haven't "activated" this FP yet, I
get the nag screen saying FP will run 14 more times. Does FP lose
functionality as this number decreases ?

Thanks
Mike

Dear Mike,

Thank you for your posting.

According to your post, you encounter the "Cannot open wpeA.tmp" error when
switching to HTML view.

If I have misunderstood your concern please don't hesitate to let me know.

1. Would you please tell me did you've installed or removed any
program/webpage code/device right before the problem first occurred?

2. Based on the "Cannot open wpeA.tmp" error, please firstly empty your
C:\WinNT\Temp folder to ensure its integrity, and then launch FP2002 to
test the situation.

If the problem still remains, check whether there is any point representing
Wpea.tmp file, modify the codes if necessary.

3. As for the activation issue, no function will be lost until the deadline
meets. You may reactivate FP2002 by calling Microsoft Product Activation
Center 1-888-652-2342 or 1-888-571-2048.

If you have any further concern, please also contact Microsoft Customer
Service (800) 426-9400, available Monday through Friday, from 6:30 A.M. to
5:30 P.M. Pacific time.

Thanks for the response. I discovered the direcotory C:\Documents and
Settings\my-user-id\Local Settings\Temp\FrontPageTempDir. That directory
contains a bunch of wpe?.tmp files. I think you might mean that directory
instead of c:\winNT\temp (I'm running Windows xp pro). There is nothing in
my code that references wpea.tmp. Actually, that file name varies (the
wpea.tmp name), as I try to "HTML-view" this particular file, but it will
always be wpe?.tmp

I have come to the conclusion that these are temporary files that FP uses,
and these got created on my machine because I have had to cold boot my
machine (for various reasons) while FP was still open.... Any of this sound
plausible ?

So, I deleted C:\Documents and Settings\my-user-id\Local
Settings\Temp\FrontPageTempDir, and the problem went away....

Arrrgghh...

Mike

PS
Regularly clean out that folder and if you have had to abort a session of FP always find and delete the hidden system web cache
files (*.web)
