Strange Error Message

I take care of an older machine running W2K Pro. Lately it has been getting
a strange error message: The title bar reads "IOMgr" and the body reads
"SynchWaitMultiple() Wait_Failed". There's an "OK" button, but pressing it
does no good. After pressing it (or the red in the corner) many times, it
will go away for a split second and then the cycle repeats. The only way it
can be cleared is to re-log on or re-boot the computer. That done, after
some sunspecifiec period, the message returns.

The computer is a Dell Precision Workstation (4-5 years old) with two SCSI
HDD's, with C: formatted FAT32 and D: formatted NTFS (please don't ask why).

Can anyone tell me what causes this and/or what the fix is?

Do you have any HP software installed? I seem to recall something from HP
causing this issue.

We did have. There's an HP G Series All-In-One machine on the network via an
HP Jet Direct. It seemed like each time that error started occurring, the HP
status icon in the systray showed "Disconnected", so I thought that might
have been the source. However, I uninstalled the HP software yesterday, and
today the messages returned.
