A friend of mine has a very strange problem. I formatted the machine
and reinstalled Win XP for him, but then the graphics cars seems to
have problem. The symptons are also very bizarre. There is always a
square of black lines behind the mouse pointer. The card is an Mobility
Radeon 7000 IGP
When he tries to play videos, there is a combination of color and and
black lines running throgh the whole video frames. I tried updating the
driver but that did not change. Could it be a hardware problem?
Everything apart from a few icons, the mouse pointer and the video
playback.
thx in advance.

It certainly sounds like a hardware problem. Unfortunately, since your
friend has a laptop you won't be able to simply swap out the video card
for a known-working one. Have your friend contact the laptop mftr.'s
tech support.
