strange dhcp issues

I have a question on dhcp. is there any logical reason why a computer
running windows xp will not pull an ip address when you restart? The only
way I have been able to get many of my clients computers to pull an ip off
their cable modem is to shut down the computer entirely and then reboot it.
This does not always work occasionally I need to reboot the customers modem
even when the isp says the modem is online and working. From my knowledge of
dhcp and tcp/ip there is no reason I can think of why I should have to do
this.Has any one encountered this problem? If so is there a fix?
Thank you
Howard

You could try putting in the ISP's DNS entries manually and make the DNS
Suffix Search Order start with the domain of the ISP.

When you say restart, you mean IPCONFIG /RELEASE followed by IPCONFIG /RENEW
is not getting an IP from the DHCP server of the ISP? When you /RELEASE, do
you get a 0.0.0.0 IP or does it stay/become a 192.168 or other IP?

when I try to manually do the ipconfig it says it cant find the dhcp server.
They get a 169 ip. The isp only uses dhcp so I don't have much to put in

Okay - I have seen this happen on my cable modem setup whenever the Cable
Services DHCP service is having issues and/or my connection (network card,
cable to modem/switch, etc) is bad. As you are getting a 169 IP, that means
INTERNAL - XP made it up. I would check the cables and have the cable
company come out and check the lines to their cable modem and do noise
tests.

You can get the DNS information if you can get an IP and go to a command
prompt and type IPCONFIG /ALL. It should list the DNS information there,
just go into their network configuration and manually enter that either on
the first screen or by using the ADVANCED button. Don't enter the
IP/SUBNET/GATEWAY info, just DNS.. And the DNS SUFFIX Search Order you can
guess by their provider. For example, if it was COX Communications, it
would be cox-internet.com.

If it were a signal issue why would it pull the ip if I shut the computer
down and turn it back on? Most times that works but the computer looses it's
lease on the ip and I have to do this. If I do a simple restart I get no
place as I said I have to do a full shut down to get it to work.
