Hello,

strangest thing happened.

While coping a *.mpeg movie to backup, disk system suddenly hanged and
I needed to force restart it.
Win xp then reported some errors on d: disk and recommended repair.
Scan disk (or what) went then on over night, it did no good,
obviously.

Now my d: disk content looks like this:
$3;[email protected]
-TÎ+ÞÚ¹¯.-Ld

Its name in win is this: -0/1*-0&.),)

It is 115GB full, out of 120GB.
It is SATA disk, it has no bad sectors.
Computer management in win xp says it is healthy FAT32 disk.
???

What can be done to get data back?

I use file scavenger, worked where filerecovery and getdataback failed.
filerecover (lc tech) failed on > 132gb when i last used it. Here is a
screen shot I took a year ago (??) that shows the differences. All the
files are listed at filerecovery.

Thank you.

WD1600JD 00GBB0

So it is not 120GB but a 160GB disk.
You have been bitten by a 48-bit LBA bug.

Nobody will fully recover your data. Restore it from a backup or forget
about it.

Yes, it is a 160GB hard drive. And in win xp it is recognized as such,
it shows some 149GB of data on it...

I don't have back up and I surly don't want to forget about it :)

Is there really no way to get the data back?
Anyone?

Thats nothing like what you originally said.

You originally said

Which is the correct story ?

It might be possible to use a recovery program that scans
the drives for file headers if your original story is correct
and the files you care about arent fragmented.

Yes, I am sorry, my mistake.

Disk is SATA, it was formatted to FAT32, it has no bad sectors, SMART
reports nothing, comp. manager in XP says it is healthy.
It is 160GB disk, in win xp it shows some 149BG used.

There are some strange %&/#$)=?(/ZÈŠŽ present on it, folders are also
named strangely...

I tried with easy recovery pro, no luck.

I am beginning to lose my faith here...
;(
shit.

download file scavenger and run the defunct volume search a bunch of stuff
should show up

i assume you have not written anything to your 160gb disk. scavenger must
not be installed on that 160gb nor any other file recovery. if that was
your boot disk then you need to pull it off and put it on another computer.
i assume it is not your boot disk since it doesnt seem to work

Too late now, but NTFS is easier to recover from 128GiB wrap around.
This is because the FAT is near the start but the MFT is 1GB in.

Directory contents can be recovered if the directory is intact and files are contiguous.
Try Svend's findpart for a damage report: findpart findfat #

Actually your data has been overwritten due to a implementation
limit and a very stupid bug where Windows will happily write to
disk (i.e.e no check whether it is too large), but the
sector numbers will "wrap" and instead of writing to a
sector at, say 130GB from start, it will write to 10GB from
start, where other data resides.

It is really not publicly known today whether data overwritten
once can be recoverd from modern disks. No data recovery outfit
admits to being able to do it. The US NSA may or may not be able
to do it. However there are indications that it is not a question
of the equipment used. The older data may just not be there
anymore, because the magnetic substrate can hold only so many
bits per area before they vanish in noise. Afte all if you
can recover from an overwrite, then the disk can actually hold
twice as much data.

He has one of those WD drives, he should be O.K unless the bit bucket
overflowed or theWD picked up bit rot. It is those cheap maxtor's that are
manufactured without a bit bucket. You need to stop using those for 6
months or until the bits compost.

Where did the 'It is 115GB full, out of 120GB' come from ?

Was that just poor recollection ?

Yeah, that was clear from the original and can be produced
by not having the 48 bit LBA support enabled properly.
I tried with easy recovery pro, no luck.

Which of the two scan types did you try ?

Hope you didnt install it on the bad drive.
I am beginning to lose my faith here...

shit.

All may not be completely lost yet, how likely is it that the
files you want are fragmented and what sort of files are they ?

What are you talking about? Bit bucket? What is that?

So, for the future, if I set this support right, it will be ok.
Tnx.

Two?
I have more options here. Advanced recovery did not help.
Hope you didnt install it on the bad drive.
Nope.

They are photos, PDF, doc and rtf documents and some fonts.

OK, I got some files back using scavenger. Lots of data is not useful,
though...

Thank you!!
