Hi!

I've suddenly got a problem I need to solve fast.
I've always had my Plextor IDE burner hooked up to the SATA controller of my
Asus A7N8X-Dlx mobo and never had any problems.
Now I can't burn anymore, Nero keeps saying "Disc id not a CD-R(W)" or "Disc
analyzis failed", when I use Plextors CDVDInfo tool it says "Disc is not a
CD-R(W)" for my burner.
I've tried removing Nero, reinstallingand running borth regged and as demo
as well as different versions (Same no matter what), tried Roxio Easy Media
(Just hangs, soft never loads).
Device manager detects what device I have but says "SCSI CDRom device"

Recent changes are update to Win XP Pro SP2
Think I've updated the SATA drivers
Installed Nvidias IDE drivers with last update
Updated (and downgraded) burner firmware
changed burner program..

Have
Windows XP pro SP2
Plextor 40/12/40a IDE burner

So far no success and I REALy need to burn a few backup discs quite soon as
my HDs are filling up.
Only thing that works without problems is burning Bin/Cue with Alcohol 120%,
but that program also chokes on images created by nero (something about
errors in burning protocol).

Anyone got any ideas what to try to fix this so my burner will be correctly
identified and let me burn again?

TIA
Thomas

How did you hook up the IDE drive to the SATA connection (Just curious) ..

It sounds like possibly bad media or a dirty drive , Did you try using a
DriveCleaner .. in case it's just dust..

No probs at all, used the newer version Abit PATA-SATA interface that
supports atapi devices, has been running perfectly for over a year, never a
single hitch untill now.

Hmm, no I haven't, but i just managed to burn a CD with XPs internal burner
soft and I've burned bin/cue combos with Alcohol with no problems. It's just
Nero that gives errors when trying to burn.

Best Wishes

Yet more confusion...
Moved the drive back to regular ide controller.. now it burns CDs, but Nero
crashes when the burn is finished (complete lockup). (one CD per reboot
burned isn't exactlya dream situation when you run a lot of servers and
need to burn quite a few CDs).

Try using the standard Windows IDE drivers instead of the ones from
NVidia.

Already tried that, didn't make any difference. Also my original problem was
that it no longer worked on my SATA controller, does the regular ide
controller drivers affect that too?
This is way weird and now that I've changed every driver I can think of back
and forth I can only think that SP2 is to blame..
on SATA -> Doesn't detect discs as writeable (Alcohol will burn bin/cue
though)
on PATA -> Crashes when burn finishes (Discs OK and fully readable after
reboot)

Best Wishes

Change the IDE cable as the original may have had an intermittant dirty
contact at the CD end. Alsocheck the power supply cables if excessively
loose -change if necessary.
