strange boot program - help

This is on a PII Gateway2000 w/WIn2k. It boots ok to the
point where it's just about to ask for user/pw when very quicky
an error message of some kind flashes at the top of the
screen and the pc reboots, and does it again and again almost
like a loop it keeps rebooting itself. I can't read the error
meaasge and I can't pause, it does this error message way
past the bios screen deep into win2k's boot. Any ideas?

Do the.... oh what the hell is it called... the boot option that asks
for confirmation before loading each driver when 2K boots up.
That should give you some idea of what's murdering the system.
Then see if you can boot to safe mode and disable that from loading or
else again do the interactive (remembered<G>) boot and don't let the
problem child load.
Eventually, hopefully, you can get it booted sufficiently to run virus
scanners. DL startup control panel and you can see if it is a program
as opposed to a service.
