Strange behaviour since upgrade?

My IE has been behaving strangely - ever since, it seems, I downloaded the
latest patches and upgrades:

1. Websites that I have accessed regularly will no longer open for me.

2. Occasionally, even though I remain connected to my ISP, Windows will
start the dialogue to establish a new internet connection.

and ...

3. Every now and then, I'll get a message about IE having encountered a
problem (it asks if I want to report it or not), and IE then just shuts down.

I have checked for spyware. I have rebooted. I am out of ideas. Any help
would be very much appreciated.

The latest IE error message includes the following:

Error Signature:
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: mshtml.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2769 Offset: 00157e21

Hi PLeb :-)

You don't mention which version of Windows you are using, or IE (SP1, SP2).
That does make a difference in some cases.

Which update(s) did you just install?

If you have Google Toolbar or Yahoo Toolbar try disabling them to see it
that stops the problem. If you have Yahoo Companion, uninstall it, as it is
known to cause a variety of problem.

also...

For XP - Insert your Windows Installation CD-ROM.

Go to Start > Run

Type in
sfc /scannow

Then click OK,

This will 'usually' restore any damaged, missing or corrupted files.

If still no joy, then continue below:

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>under Browsing
Uncheck the "Enable 3rd party browser extensions"
If this resolvs the problem then you have scumware on your system and need
to do the following:

First, Clear the TIF's and empty the recycle bin:

Empty your Recycle bin, then do the following:

Thanks, Jan, for the detailed instructions: I'll have to wait for a less
deadline-crowded moment to work through them. Yes, I should have said ...

.... I'm using XP Pro ... plus IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519.
The patches /downloads were from the Microsoft site (some time last week) and
included patch MS05-051 and MS05-050.

Thanks again for your help.

Peter

Thanks for starting this. I've been reading stuff all day, and this is the
closest thing to my problem. My last log entry for updates was the last auto
update (the one you mention). Since then, I'm not able to do a lot of normal
stuff. AvtiveX controls do not run properly, and browser functions are
crippled. Several VBS errors appear as I try to use normal Wiundows
functions. Many folks who received these updates without problem have been
clogging these pages with "mine works, there must be something wrong with
yours" posts that are about as helpful as being kept on hold for service. I
appreciate the helpful tone of this exchange.

I'm restoring XP now. My last system scan says some of my files are
corrupt. Will advise. Maybe the update is just a coincidence. who cares?
I just want some help!

Hi justwamthelp :-)

If the System Restore to the date you have chosen does not work, then
uninstall the update that you feel is the culprit if it is still in the list
and see if that resolves the problem.

Please report back and let us know how things go. :-)

Hope this helps.
