Strange audio problem

I recently installed XP Pro on a second drive because after 8 months
the original install has started to blue screen me too often. I
wanted my 120 gb drive (originally C, now D) to be devoted to video
files so the new install went to the 80 gb. I also made a
master/slave switch to be able to boot from both drives until all my
software was installed.

The install went perfect (wow, first time ever) and then I noticed
after spending all day installing software that there is stuttering in
the audio. It's either a dropout, or a digital stutter. It only
lasts a fraction of a second. It's more pronounced when other
software is in use. I even hear it when windows boots and plays the
intro music. Wave files or MP3's... same thing. Windows media player
or Winamp... same thing. If I play a 3 minute MP3, at some point it
will stutter at least once. And now after loading a few games, they
are crashing.

I currently use the onboard Creative audio (ct5880) chip. It never
had any kind of problem with the previous XP pro install and when I
switch back over to that drive, the audio problem isn't present.

I removed and reinstalled the drivers for the onboard audio with no
improvement. I searched the web for different drivers and nothing
worked any better than the drivers on the Windows disk.

I also tried installing a Diamond Monster PCI sound card and it does
the same thing. This then leads me to believe it's not a sound card
or chip problem but something upstream. I've spent a couple of days
now trying to run this down but no luck.

Can anyone help? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much.

Al
