first when i tried to enter ad it said it couldnt be found then I tried a
second time and it came up but when I tried to modify any user it said not
enough disk space which there is plenty of. Im not sure what disk space would
have to do with deleting a user but thats what it said. Also, when i tried to
add a user it said something about uniqueness. I am really perplexed and am
basically shutdown so any help would relaly be appreciated. Thanks for all
replies

thanks for you reply, here is the total message
windows cannot validate the uniqueness of this proposed user name with
global catalog

the server is not operational windows will cerate this user account but the
user can login only after the user name is verified to be unique for further
assisance see your SA
I don't think the domain controller is working but I cant verify

that's better....

the DC yo create the account cannot check if the account already exists by
checking with a global catalog... so either you have no GCs or no good
connection to GCs

by the way... if yo only have 1 AD domain make all DCs a GC!

Jorge, thanks for the reply but what can I do to fix this?. This server has
been working fine quite sometime. What can I check or do? Thanks for your
help.

PS I have another domain controller on the other side of a vpn

how many domains?
how many DCs?
it worked, now it does not... what was changed?

first thing you could do on your DCs/GCs in error:
* execute DCDIAG /C /D /V
* execute NETDIAG /DEBUG /V
* check the event logs for errors/warnings
