StorageTek L180 and L700 DC Power Problems

CHANGE USERNAME TO westes

We buy a fair number of used L180 and L700 tape libraries, and we have
noticed a fairly large number of these systems have one of the two DC power
supplies dead. Opening these always shows a burn at exactly the same
transistor on the PCB. Recently we had a unit under test where the DC
power started to fail as well.

Have other users of these libraries experienced a high failure rate on this
component? Is there some know revision of this part that avoids this
problem?

Sounds like you need to check the environment you are purchasing used units
from. We have 8 L700s and 2 L180s, and the only failures we have experienced
in 3 years are DLT drive failures, but those are pretty much expected over
time. Admittedly we run them in much more resonable ambient temeratures
(~70-74F). If your ambient room temperature is 80-85 degrees, then the
internal temps may be exceeding the 90 degrees the library is spec'ed t
(according to the on-line data sheet).
