stopping SP2

My computer downloaded SP2 and is waiting for me to install it with the
update icon staring at me from the systray. How can I save the download or
cancel the upate? SP2 does nothing I dont already have regarding patches and
firewalls so whats the point? I would just have to turn it all off anyway
and why bother if I dont have to.

But the delivery has already been made. It just hasnt been installed. I
better look at those links for any clues on how to get rid of the "click
here to install" icon. Thanks for the help.

There is more to SP2 than an improved firewall and security patches.
There are IE and OE enhancements including privacy protection, internal
checks to help prevent programs from exploiting defects, etc. Some

If you don't want SP2, double click the little icon and choose Advanced
or Custom rather than Express. You will then see the list of updates
that are ready to install. Remove the check from SP2. Finish the
little wizard and you will be prompted about whether or not you want to
be reminded to install that update again.

Do not assume that SP2 has nothing in it but old patches and a
new firewall. There are other fixes there that you *don't* have.
I would advise you to install it.

with programs not working after doing so. Others have no trouble at all.
Makes you wonder you know. Thank you for the replies.
 
Get rid of spyware and do a virus scan. Defragment drive C:. Back up drive
C:. (Don't rely on System Restore in case something goes wrong (it doesn't
uninstall files)). Update your video and sound drivers at the
manufacturer's websites. Run the Disk Cleanup utiltiy. Turn off your virus
scanner during the update. Just some things you can do to if you feel like
you need to do something special. Then go for it!

You're welcome. I think if you look closely at the "trouble"
people have had, most of it falls into two categories:

1. They installed it on a system with viruses or spyware present.

2. They never had a firewall before, and running with a firewall
creates situations they don't know how to deal with.

Neither of these is the fault of SP2.
