Stopping popups from popping up

Is there any to stop popups from actually popping up? Like when you're
downloading a file and there's a popup that tells you it's finished and it
pops up while you're looking at another site. I don't want to block the
popup from occurring, just keep it from interupting another site or program.

This is relative to your browser (e.g. IE or Firefox or something else.)
All usually have a checkbox to display/hide the notification that a
download is completed. Firefox collects these in a subwindow of
its own that does not interrupt other windows.
