Stopping msmsgs.exe from running all the tme

I know that the messenger service is integrated into a lot of Windows'
functionality, but is there any way to stop it from running?
I've disabled the service using the services.msc command, I've used the
msconfig command to check it out too, I've tried removing it from the
Windows Components group in the control panel and it seems like nothing does
the trick. Sometimes I will use the task manager to kill the process
"C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" but it still likes to appear,
especially when I reboot. Of course I've tried to uncheck the options in
the tools menu of the Windows Messenger client that stops it from running
when Windows starts up and also stops it from running in the background.

The problem is that I want to use MSN Messenger for occasional chatting, and
I don't want to appear online if I'm not. Yesterday a message popped up
from my brother and I had no idea that I was logged into windows messenger.
There must be something that I'm missing, because I just can't seem to find
a way to resolve this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon
