stopping applications from automatically launching on start-up

Hello,
Previously on Windows Me I could stop apps from launching using a function under accessories - system tools and then finding the app from there. There are around 40 apps running automatically from start-up taking up RAM and also putting themselves in the system tray. Now on Xp, how do I do stop these from launching?

Thanks for that. Now I've just got to figure out what I can safely 'knock-off' without compromising windows. I'll try to find stuff that doesn't need to be running, but it's tricky when they're all abreviated
Cheers again

Nothing on the startup tab is essential to starting Windows. On the general
tab, you can use diagnostic mode to disable all non-essential startup loads.
