stopping annoying Windows messages

does anyone know how to turn off those pop-ups that tell
you that this or that is happening or could be better
etc.? they're dsriving me nuts and I don't know what
they're called so can't search effectively in the
documentation

The easiest way is to enable the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF).

An alternative to activating the XP firewall is to install the google tool
bar that also has a number of added benefits including storing data to auto
fill forms with your name, address etc if you want that. Go to:
