Whenever I plug my new data pen into my Windows XP laptop I get a message
about a Hi-Speed USB device being detected and how I need to upgrade.

I don't know what's involved in updating but my pen (and my laptop) work
just fine - plenty fast enough for someone raised on floppy discs.

So is there any way I can stop the message? It doesn't have the handy 'Don't
Show this Message Again' tick box.

The full message is
Hi-Speed USB Device Plugged into non Hi-Speed USB Hub
If I click on the message I get a window which tells me that I must add a
Hi-Speed USB Host Controller (sounds like something useful to have at a
party!)
It's rather like telling a pensioner that she must turbo-charge her shopping
trolley. Once I've closed the message everything works just fine.

I think that this means that your new USB gizmo is 2.0 and your laptop is
1.1. The gizmo is back compatible to 1.1, so it works, but it would work
faster if you could upgrade the computer to 2.0.

How old is your laptop? All new laptops would come out of the box with 2.0.

With a desktop, you could get a USB 2.0 PCI card. With a laptop, it's
probably best to just click past the message.

When I searched on Google for "turn off high speed USB device
warning in window xp", this article was at the top of the
results list. If this solves your problem, maybe there's a
lesson to be learned here.

Thanks very much, Nepatsfan.
I did have a look at Google but I guess I didn't ask the right question.
