Stopped working / then couldn't remove and reinstall

I'm baffled. About a week ago the user went to run a scan on his machine.
MSAS opened then immediately shut down. After reading serveral posts, I
elected to uninstall, delete folder, then attempt a reinstall. The reinstall
will only run for about 15 Seconds then proceed to shut down.

One observation is a "white box appears like a pop-up for just a moment,
then disappears.

We are dealing with XP Pro, Symantec AV CE. I have scanned with both Spybot
S&D, and Lavasoft. Also have reset all browser settings.

This sounds like something is shutting down the process. This would be a
symptom of an active malware infection--including some of the recent
spamming trojans that come as zip files--the SDBOT variants. These may well
have come in ahead of Symantec's detection definitions, so doing a full scan
of the machine is a good idea.

Aside from that possibility, you might also try this fix to see if it makes
any difference--I'm dubious, but it is easy to try:

1) Open up a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd)
2) Type in the following "regsvr32 msvbvm60.dll" (without the quotes).
3) Close and re-open Windows AntiSpyware
