KB 282501--says this registry error applies to Win 2000,
but I am getting it on a home-built XP Pro machine. Also,
KB 815265.

Origninally built for my daughter, the pc has been shut-
down for the past month while daughter is moving.
Everything worked before she moved from the home (getting
divorce). First, I thought it was odd for the black
startup screen to appear on XP. I set this pc up on my
home network Internet connection and updated her virus
software before attempting a full system scan, removing
it from the network after the update. The system shut
down at the same point in 3 attempts. Each re-boot, the
system is looking for 2 files on her login that no longer
exist.
Second, I disabled these files in msconfig and restarted
with no problems and attempted a full scan again for the
system to shut down at about the same place. Found a
virus in the temp files and McAfee deleted it.
Third, Windows update recommended a driver file, that I
wish now that I had written down. I attempted to run Disk
Cleanup to remove enormous temp files where one virus was
found. The system shut down and therin lies the
problem... a very pretty blue screen. It counts up to 100
and dumps to disk before rebooting, over and over and
over.

a. Can't boot in ANY safe mode option.
b. Can't boot with the XP disk (tried the floppy version
too).
c. Can't get to recovery console.(shuts down when you
press R)
d. Can't select re-install windows either before it shuts
off.
The same error happens not matter what It ry, "STOP
0x00000051 Registry_Error ".

I have read about every article and post on this subject
and it is not listed in any Win XP area, only here in
2000. C drive is not available until the registry loads.
There must be a way to get past a,b, and c to get to the
registry before the system shuts down. At this point, I
wouldn't mind getting the default OS registry at the risk
of loosing data. Win 98 had a feature that allowed you to
boot one device at a time. Haven't found this in XP.
Nothing has worked up to this point, having tried many
solutions offered throughout the KB and MS newsgroups.
This pc:
P4 2.4 ghz
512 ram
80 gb hd
XP Pro
McAfee Internet protection.
4 other XP machines in the house are healthy.

Any suggestions you have would be much appreciated.

Thank you for the articles, but I have already ready
them, along with many others.
The problem still exists; the machine shuts down as soon
as I press "R" to access recovery console. There is no
backup of the registry outside the pc either.

Is there another way to get past the shut down point?
With four other pc's in the house, is it possible to
install the HD on one of them to save recent files not
backed up as well as getting the old/new registry and try
again?

Has anyone had success correcting this error message?

Thanks,
Renae

You probably need to use something like Remote Recover
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/remoterecover.shtml or ERD
emergency download version
http://www.winternals.com/products/repairandrecovery/erdcommander2002.asp?pid=erd

You'll need to deal with the hardware failure issue before you can proceed.
