stop windows XP allowing pop-ups

I have an older computer running Windows 95 one running
windows 2000 and two running Windows XP. All 4 are run
through a router for the DSL internet. but the two
running Windows XP always have these pop-up adds come up
and they even show through my screen saver. it was
anoying but ok until latley. they are advertising "Teen
Sex" sights and my kids are seening those how do i stop
them? the other 2 computers don't do it and the only
difference between them all are the operating systems.

First thing you'll want to do is to install or enable a firewall:

Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve the
real problem.

The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom of a larger
issue. The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.

Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports. You would need a
firewall that controls the traffic.

The above solution will not work if you have AOL as is not compatible with
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). If you have AOL, you should
contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Hit the Stop Button under Service Status section
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

disable the messenger service.
don't be confuse with windows messenger.
this messenger service transmit net send and alerter messenges in windows

Control panel > administrative tools> services>messenger>startup type:
disable

Are you sure you are using a router?
What brand /model is it?
Can you describe the DSL connections?
How Many public IP addresses do you have?

Normally, a domestic broadband router would block
messenger spam by the way it shares one public IP
address betwen multiple PCs. This is called NAT.

Messenger spam can't traverse NAT.

It's possible you have a routed block of IP addresses (I do ).
In which case, the router is indeed just an IP forwarding router.
With no NAT.

Anyway, the solution is to put up a firewall.

One solution is to use a software firewall on each machine.
I'd use the free version of ZoneAlarm.
This will permit you to configure a local zone for file sharing on your LAN.

Another possibility is a hardware firewall.
Perhaps the router has something built it.
Failing that, an external box.
