All,

I worked on a buddies machine last night to stop the worm from eating his
machine :-) I scanned the system and removed the bug and then treid to
install the MS patch and the darn system would net allow me to install the
patch. Kept saying that, "it could not verify the integrity of the
update.inf file. This install needs to have the Cryptographic??? service
running". I stopped and started that thing a few times and it would NOT let
me load the patch no matter what.

Any thoughts on what to do to get this thing to load without having to
reload everything?

Also note that I was able to set the firewall up and update the virus scan
and he can get online but the patch is not installed. Also, he has OEM
restore CD's and not the actual XP CD's.

Can I use my XP CD to do a sfc /scannow?

Or maybe repair windows with my CD?

I was told by an IT person here at work that I need to turn of the Restore
feature and that should fix it. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!!!

To correct the problem with Cryptographic Services:

Step #1

Perform a Disk Cleanup:

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

Step #2:

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Select "Normal Startup", click "apply" and reboot.

Step #3:

1. Start the Administrative Tools utility in your Control Panel.
2. Double-click Services.
3. Right-click "Cryptographic Services", and then click Properties.
4. Click "Automatic" for Startup type, and then click Start.
5. Try installing the Updates again. If the problem persists, go to Step 6.
6. Click Start, and then click Run.
7. In the Open box, type: CMD , and then click OK.
8. At the Command Prompt, type (or Copy & Paste) the following commands,
each individually, pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2

net start cryptsvc

Type EXIT to close the Command Prompt, and install the patch:

Blaster Worm: Critical Security Patch for Windows XP (32-bit version - direct download)
http://microsoft.com/downloads/deta...6C-C5B6-44AC-9532-3DE40F69C074&displaylang=en

If installation continues to fail, try this additional procedure:

Click Start > Run and type: CMD , hit enter.

In the Command Prompt window, type the following commands,
pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc

net start cryptsvc

regsvr32 softpub.dll

regsvr32 wintrust.dll

regsvr32 initpki.dll

regsvr32 dssenh.dll

regsvr32 rsaenh.dll

regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

EXIT

Try installing the patch once again.

Yes, until you have corrected everrything and know no virus is present. Run
a full anti-virus scan after the fix and then turn the "Restore" function
back on.

One more thing. BE SURE: turn off both Windows "Restore" function AND
"GoBack" if you have it [it is a part of Norton's SystemWorks.

Nicholas,

I was unable to get anywhere on this procedure until the very last step.
In the Command Prompt window, type the following commands,
pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc

net start cryptsvc

regsvr32 softpub.dll

regsvr32 wintrust.dll

regsvr32 initpki.dll

regsvr32 dssenh.dll

regsvr32 rsaenh.dll

regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

EXIT

Try installing the patch once again.

Thanks for your help!!!!!
