Someone give me a clue. I was having a problem with the
Blue Screen Of Death which just got worse and worse. This
was after I had a problem with the W32Swen virus which I
think I had fixed. So I Reformatted and reloaded XP. Now
it doesn't even respect me enough to give me the Blue
Screen, it just Shuts Down and then Reboots all on it's
own. The occurence seems to be random, not associated
with any particular program, at least not so I can tell.

Whas up with thisand how'd I fix it?

Hi Ron,

I had the same problem. Funny how that little guy gets around.(Not really
:-( ) In any case, I did the same thing as you and still had the problem.
After 3 weeks of numerous calls to microsoft and talks here with the
competent MVP's; it was easier for me to go out and get a new harddrive. The
virus apparently had done more damage than imaginable and the HD couldn't be
restored to working condition.
I'm not the type who likes being the bearer of bad new; that is just my own
personal experience. Take it for what it's worth. :-)

Sounds like you still have damaged files, sure you
formated?Try formating,loading XP again.

Hi Earl

That's interesting. I didn't think that software - which viruses are -
could effect hardware to the extent of making it unusable. I've always been
under the impression that software can't 'physically' damage hardware,
although it can cause problems with the OS, BIOS, MBR etc.

Hi Will,

I'm only passing on information that was thrown into my lap. Whether the
virus affected some BIOS setting etc was also taken into consideration when
I did my formatting etc, but still to no avail. When I say
"Physically"damaged, I do not mean to say that the HD was warped or anything
along those lines; god knows what really happened to it. It simply was not
in any condition to be used again.
Now I have a new HD, the old OS and the OLD Bios settings; everything works
wonderfully. My old HD was suppossably cleaned and formatted through the
Windows Formatting; but obviously it did not do the trick.I can not explain
it anymore than you can. :-)

Just because two events happen at about the same time does not mean they
are related.

Hi Earl

If the HD is using FAT32, boot to it using a Win 9x EBD, select 'Minimal' -
option 4 if I remember correctly, then type the following at the A: prompt

format c:

that should clear all and sundry.

If you reloaded then your error recovery is to reboot. In control panel,
system, change error recovery procedure so that when the error occurs you can
investigate it. Since it's random, check your cooling.
