Remove all hardware except motherboard, CPU, one RAM
stick, one hard drive, and video card.

Does that work? If so, start adding things until you get
a BSOD again.

If that doesn't work, I would suspect bad hardware (bad
or damaged RAM is notorious for this), do you have
anything else you can swap in to test?

Hey! thanks for the quick reply. ok - 2 512 sticks of
corsair xms pc2700 ddr. found knowledge base article
pointing to memory. removed one stick and tried again.
several times. crap. here's what happens now. spins up the
cdrom for that 17% file driver.cab to a higher speed.
copies for maybe 30 seconds, drive light goes out on the
cdrom but the cd keeps spinning at the higher rate. error
pop up sayin it cant read file off of cd. click enter to
retry, no drive light and a much too fast return with the
same error. drive still spinning at high speed. cdrom bad
maybe, right? wrong. same thing with a different cdrom
that works fine in another machine. XP disk bad maybe,
right? wrong, checks fine for the files on another machine
WITH the cdrom that supposedly produced the error on the
new one. (man, my wife is pissed, there are computer
entrails all over the house now). *sigh* whats left?
processor? MB? or HDD? now im gonna try swapping out those
parts with known good ones.

got any suggestions? man, im stumped....
