I just assembled a P4 3.0GHz system. I plan on getting a new HDD, but in
the meantime figured I'd try it out with a 4.2G Quantum Fireball I had
laying around with Win2k on it. That's when the fun started. BTW - this
drive boots fine on the machine I'm writing this on now.

On normal startup I get the "Starting Windows" status bar, then a blue
screen with a STOP: ... inaccessible_boot_device

Booting DOS from a floppy can't find the C:\ drive. Checked jumpers, etc -
all as it should be.

So ... what has my muddled mind missed?

thanks

Is the C partition NTFS?
DOS can't do NTFS without 3rd party driver... think
http://www.sysinternals.com sells one.

Getting an "inaccessible boot device" is a typical result of
trying to move a Win2k installation from one system to
another. One possible solution is to change the IDE driver
to the generic standard IDE before pulling drive out of the
other system. Another is doing a repair or clean install in
new system.

You can't take a hdd with win2k installed from one machine, and put it into
another machine.

Your best bet is running a repair installation from the win2k cd (with the
drive in the new machine).
(Keep in mind that it won't boot on the machine you're using now afterwards
tho, only the new machine).
