Stop Error Codes

I am working on a box w/XP Home. Recently installed was a wireless router.
It has a stop error code notating a registry issue. I've read the KB article
on this. I can't get past the blue screen w/ the error code. I've tried to
reinstall windows, formatting and installing all to no avail. Everything
brings me to the blue screen and no further. I'm considering writing zeros.
Is it just an activation issue w/ the router and a phone call to MS? If so
can someone give me the number. It is a legal copy of XP so all I want is to
get it to boot. I was told that a router was considered an upgrade piece of
hardware. How many upgrades are possible before notification is required?

TIA,
DTV

This is likely a conflict with you network card rather than the router
unless you have an internal router. You aren't even able to boot to XP so
there is no way this can be a WPA issue. Besides that WPA doesn't give you a
blue screen. You would be greeted with a message informing you that you have
to activate. Try pulling your network card and see if XP will install or
boot tot he Desktop. Then shut down and install the card and see if it will
be picked up with Plug n Play.

You might find an answer if you post your question to a networking group
rather than a "basics" group. Try this group:

Sorry about the wrong group. Thanks for the help. The box has no NIC. It is
on the board and with no disability in the BIOS. I haven't looked for a
jumper yet. The router is MS wireless and is the only new piece of hardware.
I have 3 friends that had the same issue. They ended up low level
formatting. I don't want to go there. Any other suggestions other than a
boot sector virus?

A low level format of the hard drive is not going to resolve an issue with a
router. Three friends with a similar problem all having to low level
format??? Perhaps this is a virus that the 4 of you are sharing.

No e-mail sharing at all. Just aquatinted through technology. Writing zeros
because they found it to be the quickest way to resolve the problem. Maybe
not the most orthodox way...however they found it to work...quickly. It's
not really an issue with a router, rather it is an issue with a blue screen
and a stop order.

If the drive has bad sectors then a low level format could be an answer.
Have you tried checking the hard drive manufacturer site for a disk utility
that might check the drive for problems? Also There are a couple of software
programs that claim to repair bad sectors non destructively. One is called
HDD Regenerator http://www.topdownloads.net/software/view.php?id=8307
another is Spinrite http://grc.com/spinrite.htm Both take at least 24 hours
to complete a scan/repair.

Do you know how the hard drive was initially partitioned and formatted? Disk
utilities like MaxBlast (from Maxtor) sometimes create problems that XP
can't cope with.
