I have Windows server 2000. I am getting c0000218
systemroot\system32\config\software registry file failure
Registry cannot load the hive file.

I do not want to lose the information on the server. It is
not a data but an application server. I would like to be
able to recover from this error without losing the setup
that I have for my app.

Possible?

Please help

Hello,

1. Boot into the Recovery Console
229716 Description of the Windows 2000 Recovery Console
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=229716

2. In Recovery Console, go to %windir%\system32\config\ and type these
commands hitting enter at the end of each line:

Ren system system.old

Copy %windir%\repair\system
Exit

3. Try to boot the machine.

Thank You.

Diana.

Diana,

The recommendats you made will rollback the system registry from when the
the system was originally built and throw out any changes to the system hive
that have taken place since the system was originally installed. That step
should not be done lightly -- make backup copies of your system (and
software hives before attempting these changes).

In all likelihood the recommended actions will not resolve the issue, since
the Stop c218 referred to the SOFTWARE hive as the faulty registry hive, not
the system hive. Replacing the software hive with the copy located in the
repair folder will rollback all your applications since they were not
installed when you originally installed your operating system.

Recommendations are to restore the system state from backup (if you have
one).

Failing that, check to see if you have a REGBACK folder which may contain
backed up copies of your registry. It's usually located under
C:\WINNT\REPAIR\REGBACK.

Failing that, you might be able to salvage your software hive (first make a
backup copy of the \winnt\system32\config\software file ...) by loading the
hive in a Windows XP regedit. There's not a lot of options beyond that. If
you have problems with some of the steps and require assistance, you may
wish to open a support incident with Microsoft.
